History and Politics in Trinidad and Tobago

History runs deep in almost any place you go on Earth, but in the Caribbean there are many impactful historical events that are not mentioned much in every day life. Most of the countries in the Caribbean have been controlled or conquered by another country or many different countries for many years before becoming independent. That itself, the fight for independence and the clashing of ruling cultures makes for a rich history.

Trinidad was under British control until 1962 and in 1976 Trinidad and Tobago became a Republic Commonwealth of Britain. This is essentially how most of the historical factors come in play, involvement of another country. Trinidad was taken from the native tribes by the Spanish where the Spanish were trying to convert everyone into Christianity. Eventually the island was seized the British in 1802, where they made the island a sugar colony. After the British were stable in Trinidad thats when you began to see a lot of the Indian and African immigrants being brought there to work. From 1802 all the way up to its independence in 1962 the island was owned by Britain and France and was flipped back and fourth countless times.
