Puerto Rican History

Looking over the historical highlights of the islands of the Caribbean can be very interesting especially with the territorial changes throughout the years. One of these islands, Puerto Rico, has had one of the more rich histories of them all. It was conquered in 1493 by the Spanish shortly after the Spanish state formed. Even though the Ortoroid people were the first known people in Puerto Rico they were wiped out by the Spanish. Puerto Rico was always a Spanish colony. In fact, it was a Spanish colony for about 400 years until the Spanish-American war. In the war America invaded Puerto Rico and made it it's territory. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, so it technically still did not gain its independence. After being controlled by Spain for all of those years Puerto Rican culture is very similar to Spains, but it still blends culture from Europe, Africa, Asia, and America.
